The Choice is Yours

No matter what situation you are facing, you always can choose how to respond.

I’m not saying it’s easy. When I’m terrified of something but have to face it anyway, I’m still terrified. I’m facing it, even though I’m shaking, crying, and sweating. Warriors can maybe face that terror with some semblance of grace. I’m not in that camp. My fear is obvious and unbounded: yet I face the terror anyway.

That’s how I choose to respond when things happen in life. I choose to keep fighting, to do something about it. Some days are easier than others. Some days are just a little bit of facing the terror and a lot of curling up into a little ball. I never said I was perfect. I said I keep trying.

If I keep trying to move forward, eventually I’ll find a way to move forward. It’s a matter of time. If I can find someone who knows how to move forward and talk to them about how they do it, I can get farther faster. Otherwise, I do what I can, as well as I can, with what I happen to have on hand at the moment.

I’m not the little engine that could. I simply don’t like sitting around. I am of the opinion that there has to be something I can do. This isn’t always true, but it’s true the vast majority of the time.

If you want to have greater control over your life, choose the way you respond to it. Choose to try to make a difference. Choose to try to make it better. Doing nothing is a choice. Decide what you want, decide to go after it, and do so. It may not work out, but it’s usually better than doing nothing. Even if you don’t get to where you want to be, a lot of the time a path branches off that will take you someplace just as good or even better.

It’s sounds hokey, I know – but I’m living this right now. I’m choosing to make positive changes. I’m choosing to make the changes I need to make to move forward into a more positive place.

Do nothing, or do something positive. The choice is yours.
